A jury found a Wisconsin judge accused of helping a Mexican immigrant dodge federal authorities guilty of obstruction Thursday, marking a victory for President Donald Trump as he continues his sweeping immigration crackdown across the country.

Federal prosecutors charged Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan with obstruction, a felony, and concealing an individual to prevent arrest, a misdemeanor, in April. The jury acquitted her on the concealment count, but she still faces up to five years in prison on the obstruction count.

The jury returned the verdicts after deliberating for six hours.

Dugan and her attorneys left the courtroom, ducked into a side conference room and closed the door without speaking to reporters.

According to a court filings that include an FBI affidavit and a federal grand jury indictment, immigration authorities traveled to the Milwaukee County courthouse on April 18 after learning 31-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz had reentered the country illegally and was scheduled to appear before Dugan for a hearing in a state battery case.

Dugan learned that agents were in the corridor outside her courtroom waiting for Flores-Ruiz. She left the courtroom to confront them, falsely telling them their administrative warrant for Flores-Ruiz wasn’t sufficient grounds to arrest him and directing them to go to the chief judge’s office.

While the agents were gone, she addressed Flores-Ruiz’s case off the record, told his attorney that he could attend his next hearing via Zoom and led Flores-Ruiz and the attorney out a private jury door. Agents spotted Flores-Ruiz in the corridor, followed him outside and arrested him after a foot chase. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced in November he had been deported.

A daycare facility allegedly involved in Minnesota's ongoing fraud scandal has hit back at criticism over a misspelled sign as staff reportedly 'truck in' children.

The Quality 'Learing' Center in Minneapolis was thrust into the spotlight last week after independent journalist Nick Shirley shared footage of the facility apparently devoid of children despite receiving millions of dollars in funding.

When video emerged of the childcare facility, eagle-eyed critics also noted the sign above the door misspelled the word 'learning.'

On Monday, the New York Post observed staff 'trucking in' dozens of children, despite locals admitting they thought the facility had been 'permanently closed' because they never saw kids being dropped off.

'We've never seen kids go in there until today. That parking lot is empty all the time, and I was under the impression that place is permanently closed,' one resident who lives nearby said.

As many as 20 young children and toddlers were seen walking into the facility on Monday morning, prompting Ibrahim Ali, the son of the facility's owner, to hit back at reports it is usually a ghost town.

'Do you go to a coffee shop at 11 p.m. and say, "Hey, they're not working?,"' Ali said.

He argued that when Shirley arrived and began filming the near-deserted facility, it had simply not yet opened for the day.

He said there were 16 children being taken care of inside the center on Monday.

Ali also attempted to shift blame for the incorrect 'learing' sign, accusing a graphic designer that had been hired of making a spelling mistake.

'What I understand is [the owners] dealt with a graphic designer. He did it incorrectly. I guess they didn't think it was a big issue,' the 26-year-old said.

'That's gonna be fixed.'

The center claims its opening hours are 2pm to 10pm, Monday to Thursday.

Footage of the facility sparked outrage among lawmakers and allegations state authorities allowed the 'largest fraud in US history' to go unchecked.

But Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families Commissioner Tikki Brown shot down Shirley's concerns, noting each of the facilities mentioned in his video had been subject to inspections in the last six months.

She said in all cases, children were present when authorities arrived to conduct their searches.

'There have been ongoing investigations with several of those centers. None of those investigations uncovered findings of fraud,' Brown said.

Brown also noted the daycare centers in the video have active licenses with the state and will continue receiving payments.

On Sunday, FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI has long been aware of fraud allegations in the state and threatened action against perpetrators.

'The FBI believes this is just the tip of a very large iceberg,' Patel wrote.

'We will continue to follow the money and protect children, and this investigation very much remains ongoing.'

'Furthermore, many are also being referred to immigration officials for possible further denaturalization and deportation proceedings where eligible.'

Addressing the allegations made in Shirley's video, Patel said the 'FBI is aware of recent social media reports in Minnesota.'

He claimed that the bureau has moving to 'dismantle large-scale fraud schemes exploiting federal programs.'

'Fraud that steals from taxpayers and robs vulnerable children will remain a top FBI priority in Minnesota and nationwide.

According to Shirley, the childcare center pocketed $1.9 million from Minnesota's Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) in 2025, bringing the total to $4 million.

Shirley, in his investigation, arrived at the doorsteps of several daycare centers, claiming to be a father looking to enroll his child, but said he never saw any children at the facilities.

He said it was 'potentially the largest fraud scandal in US history.'

ICE agents descended on Minnesota this week in response to the growing scandal, arriving on the doorstep of the nearby ABC Learning Center to probe its books.

An international student has been jailed over a baseball bat attack in Sydney he told police he carried out in the belief he was working on behalf of the Chinese government.

Zheming “Tommy” Zhang, 23, was sentenced to two years and nine months’ imprisonment in the NSW District Court this month with a non-parole period of one year and eight months for bashing a man in his Matraville home and targeting another man in Maroubra.

He was arrested in Tasmania for unrelated offences and extradited to Sydney where he pleaded guilty to aggravated entry into a dwelling with intent (and intentionally inflicting bodily harm), and aggravated entry into a dwelling with intent to intimidate, The Daily Telegraph reported.

According to court documents Zhang told NSW Police he thought he was working on a “top secret” mission for the Shanghai Police Department but later realised he had been the victim of an elaborate scam.

Zhang told police he was contacted by a person claiming to be from Telstra in Melbourne in 2023 who told him his phone was being used to commit fraud and that he had to contact police in Shanghai, and when he did a person who identified himself as a sergeant told him there was a warrant out for his arrest.

The Brisbane-based student said he denied being involved in criminal activity but offered to help the police when the man threatened his father, and then paid a $20,000 bond which he believed would prevent him from being arrested when he returned the China.

The fake police officer then told Zhang he needed to help the Chinese government in Australia, and instructed him to fly to Sydney in June of the same year to attack an elderly Australian government employee who was a “pervert” and had been “disrespectful” to the Shanghai police, Zhang claimed.

Zhang told police he had believed he had been instructed to attack the victim in a “formal declarement” saying “armed charges permitted”, according to court documents.

Imani Smith, who once played a young Nala in Disney’s “The Lion King” on Broadway, died on Sunday after she was found with stab wounds at a home, according to the Middlesex County, New Jersey, Prosecutor’s Office.

She “had her whole life ahead of her,” a GoFundMe account set up by Smith’s aunt, Kira Helper, said. “She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person.”

On December 21, just after 9:15 a.m., authorities in Edison, New Jersey, received a 911 call about a stabbing, according to a release.

“Upon their arrival to a residence on Grove Avenue, they discovered Imani Smith, 26, of Edison with stab wounds,” the release said. Smith was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Officials have arrested Jordan D. Jackson-Small, 35, of Edison, in connection with Smith’s death. Authorities said the two knew each other before the incident and described it as “not a random act of violence.”

Smith’s father, Rawni Helper, said in a phone call with CNN Saturday that Jackson-Small is the father of Smith’s 3-year-old son.

The French authorities have seized gold bars, expensive watches, and other valuables from a former Ukrainian prosecutor general living in the country, according to local media.

A villa near Nice owned by Svyatoslav Piskun, who served as Ukraine’s top prosecutor in the 2000s, was reportedly raided in a joint Ukrainian-French operation last week. Details were reported on Monday by Ukraine’s Dzerkalo Tizhna (Weekly Mirror), citing a source familiar with the probe.

According to the outlet, Piskun failed to explain how he acquired 3kg of gold, roughly €90,000 ($106,000) in cash, and 18 luxury wristwatches valued at over $1 million. French authorities suspect him of money laundering, the outlet claimed.

Kiev’s State Investigation Bureau (DBR), which operates under the president’s office, reportedly requested and participated in the raid. Previous Ukrainian press reports suggest the action in France is linked to a case against oligarch Igor Kolomoysky, who has been held in pre-trial detention for over two years on multiple charges, including allegedly ordering a murder in 2003.

Kenya’s government has repatriated 119 of its nationals rescued from illegal employment scam compounds in Myanmar, with hundreds more reportedly still stuck in shelters and detention facilities.

The victims were caught up in a network of fraud hubs that have flourished in Myanmar’s Karen State near Thailand, where trafficked workers from several countries have been forced to run online fraud schemes after being lured by fake job offers, according to officials.

In a statement on Monday, Kenya’s Foreign Ministry said raids by the Myanmar government in September that involved arrests, seizures, bombings, and demolitions at “the scam compounds” left the workers stranded.

“The criminal elements operating the camps fled, abandoning workers – including over 200 Kenyans – who sought refuge in military shelters in Myawaddy and Shwe Kokko, while another group of over 100 Kenyans crossed over to Thailand,” the ministry stated.

British authorities have brought new counts of rape and sexual assault against comedian Russell Brand, who is already facing similar charges involving four women.

The United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Tuesday that the new charges – one count of rape and one of sexual assault – against Brand were in relation to two further women. The alleged offences took place in 2009, the CPS said.

Brand, 50, had already been charged in April with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The charges were brought after an 18-month investigation launched when four women alleged they had been assaulted by the comedian.

Prosecutors said these offences took place from 1999 to 2005, one in the English seaside town of Bournemouth and the other three in London.

Brand pleaded not guilty to those charges in a London court.
