Naito always thought he would be the one to retire Tanahashi.

Headlining NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 is Hiroshi Tanahashi’s retirement match. He’ll be in a singles match against current AEW talent and seven-time IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada.

Tanahashi’s pending retirement was discussed by former NJPW talent Tetsuya Naito. Naito was interviewed by web Sportiva and expressed that he always felt he’d be the person to put an end to the era of Tanahashi in New Japan.

Naito is disappointed that he is not Tanahashi’s final opponent. He added that him no longer being under contract to New Japan increased the chances of him being Tanahashi’s final opponent.

“I’ve always had that feeling. It was my job to end the era of Hiroshi Tanahashi, but in the end, I wasn’t the opponent in Tanahashi’s retirement match, so I’m very disappointed that I wasn’t able to make that happen.” Naito went on to mention his opinion that leaving NJPW increased the chances of him being Tanahashi’s final opponent, “Yeah, even more so. In fact, leaving might have made it slightly more possible.”

To start 2026, Pro Wrestling NOAH is presenting ‘NOAH The New Year 2026.’ Los Tranquilos de Japon are scheduled to challenge for the GHC Tag Team Championship. It is being advertised as BUSHI and a mystery partner going for the titles.

BUSHI and Tetsuya Naito wrapped up with New Japan earlier in 2025.

I was just really happy to hear from Adam Cole and I thought the fans would be so happy to see him and obviously, Adam Cole’s been a great champion in AEW and it was important for Adam Cole to step away and prioritize his health and wellbeing. We love him, and he’s a great star here and absolutely, like he said, when he spoke earlier, we want Adam Cole to be involved in AEW, and I don’t have any health updates other than to say you can see he’s doing well and he’s excited about AEW… So with Adam Cole, no particular update other than to say you can see he’s doing well, and since we last heard from him when he had to vacate the TNT Championship at AEW All In Texas. It was a sad moment, it was a hard moment for a lot of the fans and for a lot of us so we were so happy to hear from him… He’s very good (at being an analyst). He’s (an) excellent host.”

It was previously reported that WWE was lining up potential creative for one final Jericho run, and those now seem to be in full swing. Alex McCarthy of Wrestling Intel reports that not only is Jericho leaving AEW, but his WWE arrival may be sooner than many previously thought possible.

McCarthy noted on Saturday night that Jericho's AEW contract expires on Dec. 31 at midnight. While fans saw the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia at the end of January as a logical debut date, McCarthy reports that WWE is considering debuting Jericho at the one-year anniversary of Monday Night Raw on Netflix on Jan. 5.

WWE is loading up that particular show from Brooklyn, N.Y., with Bron Breakker challenging CM Punk for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The Takedown on SI can independently confirm that multiple higher-ups in AEW are under the impression that Jericho is done with the company and will be returning to WWE.

More details are set to be announced.

Well deserved. They got the opportunity, and they have showed out again and again.

AEW star Buddy Matthews has provided a candid and somewhat concerning update on his recovery from ankle surgery. The House of Black member took to his Instagram story to inform fans that his return to the ring is taking longer than anticipated due to lingering nerve issues.

Delayed Recovery
Matthews, who underwent surgery in August 2025, admitted that the rehabilitation process has been frustratingly slow. Despite hoping to be back in action by now, he is still dealing with significant numbness in the affected area.

“It’s been a long process. I’m still having nerve issues with a lot of numbness,” Matthews wrote. “But I’ve accepted that it’s going to take time. I really thought I’d have returned to the ring by now, but I can only control what I can.”

Lingering Issues
This latest update follows a post from earlier this month where Matthews celebrated being able to perform hack squats for the first time since his operation. Even then, he noted that he was “still very restricted with ankle mobility” and that numbness was a persistent factor.

“Numbness is still a factor but hopefully subsides in the near future,” he shared at the time.

The Injury
Matthews originally suffered the injury in February 2025 during his entrance at AEW Grand Slam: Australia. He rolled his ankle before his match against Kazuchika Okada even began but still managed to compete in the bout. After months of trying to rehab the injury naturally, he opted for surgery in August.

They also made a video essay about Chyna for people that aren't into wrestling, which was fun.
